손이 먼저인가, 칼이 먼저인가 (The Hand or the Knife: Which Comes First?)

본문: 출애굽기(Exodus) 17:8–13

[출17:8-12]

8 그 때에 아말렉이 와서 이스라엘과 르비딤에서 싸우니라

9 모세가 여호수아에게 이르되 우리를 위하여 사람들을 택하여 나가서 아말렉과 싸우라 내일 내가 하나님의 지팡이를 손에 잡고 산 꼭대기에 서리라

10 여호수아가 모세의 말대로 행하여 아말렉과 싸우고 모세와 아론과 훌은 산 꼭대기에 올라가서

11 모세가 손을 들면 이스라엘이 이기고 손을 내리면 아말렉이 이기더니

12 모세의 팔이 피곤하매 그들이 돌을 가져다가 모세의 아래에 놓아 그가 그 위에 앉게 하고 아론과 훌이 한 사람은 이쪽에서, 한 사람은 저쪽에서 모세의 손을 붙들어 올렸더니 그 손이 해가 지도록 내려오지 아니한지라

13 여호수아가 칼날로 아말렉과 그 백성을 쳐서 무찌르니라

The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.

Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands."

So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.

As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.

When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset.

So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

신명기(Deuteronomy)  25:17-18

17 너희는 애굽에서 나오는 길에 아말렉이 네게 행한 일을 기억하라

18 곧 그들이 너를 길에서 만나 네가 피곤할 때에 네 뒤에 떨어진 약한 자들을 쳤고 하나님을 두려워하지 아니하였느니라

Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt.

When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.

출애굽기(Exodus) 17:11 모세가 손을 들면 이스라엘이 이기고 손을 내리면 아말렉이 이기더니

시편 Psalms 127:1 “여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면, 세우는 자의 수고가 헛되며, 여호와께서 성을 지키지 아니하시면 파수꾼의 깨어 있음이 헛되도다”

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

출애굽기(Exodus) 17:13 "여호수아가 칼날로 아말렉과 그 백성을 쳐서 무찌르니라"

So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

느헤미야(Nehemiah) 4:9 “우리가 우리 하나님께 기도하며 그들로 말미암아 파수꾼을 두어 주야로 방비하는데”

But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
